LSU Museum of Art

As Baton Rouge's only dedicated art museum, the LSU Museum of Art serves as a vital cultural and educational resource for Louisiana's capital city.

What Southern Palette Supports

LSU Museum of Art supports faculty and graduate research through access to its permanent collection and exhibitions, facilitates curatorial collaboration on academic publications, and offers object-based teaching opportunities and class tours for academic units including Art & Design, Art History, History, English, and Anthropology.

In addition, the museum enhances student engagement and retention through co-curricular programs such as artist talks, panel discussions, and experiential learning opportunities for interns and student workers. These initiatives align with LSU’s mission to foster a robust and inclusive learning environment, contributing to students’ sense of belonging and professional preparedness.

The LSU Museum of Art’s school programs reflect a commitment to education. These programs are intended to enhance school curricula, encourage innovative teaching practices, and contribute to the expansion of classroom walls. School programs are tailored to the needs of individual classes and are creatively adapted to all ages and abilities. Museum staff is available to help teachers design a visit that innovatively bridges disciplines and integrates original artwork as primary-source material that can strengthen learning.

All of our tours are facilitated by a trained museum educator whose goal is to create a dynamic, fun, and inclusive experience for all. Tours may include a hands-on art-making component, a literary arts component, or a math or science component, and can be customized to support your specific curricular needs.

Visit

The LSU Museum of Art, located on the fifth floor of the Shaw Center for the Arts, comprises 13,000 square feet distributed among 14 galleries. With ceilings more than 15 feet tall, the contemporary space can comfortably accommodate works of art in a wide range of media.

In addition to holding one of the largest university-affiliated art collections in the South—roughly 6,000 works—the museum presents touring exhibitions of regional, American, and European painting, sculpture, decorative arts, works on paper, and photography. The museum also supports and hosts lectures and workshops by local and visiting artists and boasts a robust schedule of school and community programs.

The museum is a great resource for College of Art & Design students—gallery talks, receptions, art unveilings for new acquisitions, community programs, and exhibitions from renowned local, national, and international artists are just some of the events the Baton Rouge and LSU community has come to cherish and embrace.
